Zero-Knowledge Encryption

Most apps promise privacy. ClearCiviQ proves it with math. Here is exactly how it works.

You enter data on your device

When you input information into ClearCiviQ, it stays on your phone. It is never sent to our servers in readable form.

Your device encrypts it immediately

Before any data leaves your device, it is encrypted using AES-256 with a key that only you hold. We have no access to this key.

We only ever see ciphertext

Our servers store encrypted blobs, mathematical noise without your key. Even if our servers were breached, attackers get nothing useful.

Decryption only happens on your device

When you open the app, your device decrypts your data locally. The readable version of your data never exists on our infrastructure.

What "Zero Knowledge" Actually Means

The term comes from cryptography. In a zero-knowledge system, one party (you) can prove to another (us) that you possess information, without revealing the information itself.

In ClearCiviQ, our servers have mathematical proof that your encrypted data exists, but we have zero ability to read what that data says. The encryption key lives only on your device.

This means if you forget your passphrase and lose your recovery key, we cannot recover your data for you. That is the trade-off, and we think it is the right one for people navigating sensitive government processes.
